How Firm is Your Foundation?

By Jerry Roach

“If the foundation be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3)

This question was posed in a perilous and perplexing time. This may have been during the time that King Saul was seeking to kill David.

What does “a man after the heart of God” do when social and civil order begin to collapse? Where do we turn when justice and law are replaced with anarchy?

Aren’t we living in such a time?

The foundations of our nation, our government, our society, marriage and the home and sadly even the church seem to be eroding and collapsing. The moral decline of the USA is astounding.  There is such disregard for truth, utter disrespect for law and order, no fear of God.

Seems like we’ve become desensitized to bloodshed and murder.

To some it’s like a sport to shoot a cop in the back or in the head.  God help our law enforcement officers!

I recently heard that we have now aborted nearly 70 million babies.  We are shedding innocent blood! And you and I are paying for it with our tax dollars.  We’re even harvesting and selling their body parts.

Psalm 11:3 asks the question, “What can the righteous do?”

In the first verse we can find David’s answer, “In the LORD put I my trust.” He is our Refuge, our Rock, our Firm Foundation!

Focus on present circumstances can cause one to fear and “flee to your mountain” (V.1) Faith looks beyond present circumstances to the LORD on His throne. (V.4) God sees what’s happening. He is Omniscient, Omnipresent, and Omnipotent. He allows us to go through times of testing. He will right all wrongs one day.

Remember Sodom. Psalm 11:6 tells us of what’s in store for the wicked… “snares, fire and brimstone and an horrible tempest…”

Verse 7 says “… the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; His countenance doth behold the upright” or as NIV renders “… upright men will see His face.”

What can we do?

I oft times think of St. Paul’s final testimony after enduring much persecution sitting in a prison cell awaiting execution.  “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith… there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give me…” (2 Timothy 4:6,7)

Trust in the Righteous One.  He is the true foundation!

“…the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His.” - (2 Timothy 2:19)

"The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to his foes;
That soul, tho' all hell should endeavor to shake,
I'll never, no, never, no, never forsake!"

How firm a foundation!
